There are two sorts of people who look search and apply for IT courses. Someone who wishes to base their career on a specific set of IT skills and someone who is looking to augment their current non-IT based career with the addition of some related IT skills. There are aspects of IT that affect almost every industry or job-type. It can range from a basic knowledge word processors (such as creating a document in Microsoft Word) to the professional use of complex software applications (such as using AutoCad to produce engineering diagrams).

In the context of choosing an IT course it is best to take a hard look at your own capabilities and how you can build on existing knowledge. IT-specific careers can be broadly divided into the below categories:

A networking career involves setting up and maintaining information transmissions, network services and network devices. IT courses related to computer networking, network security, LAN/WAN Administration and Network Engineering all come to mind.

Technical Support jobs involve helping others solving hardware and software issues as well as ensuring computers and general IT systems in a company run smoothly. This can range from remote Desktop Support technicians to inhouse IT support specialists and may involve some forms of system testing and analysis.

Database Management or Systems Admin jobs involve managing large collections of data and developing the programs that interface with these systems. Database technologies vary but IT courses in Linux and Windows-based database management are the most common. Careers range from simpler database warehousing roles to Systems Security Administration to Database Development.

Applications Development or Programming careers focus on creating and improving on custom programmes to perform specific tasks. Common roles include Software Engineer, Applications developer and systems analysis. Combining an application course qualification with a business IT course will often allow you to pursue Project Management roles in the application development environment.

E-Business & Digital Media specialists use a combination of development and design to produce webpage content, e-commerce shops, online tools and mobile applications. It is important to note that most IT courses make a distinction between design and development. Design can relate to visual aspects of digital media such as branding, user interface layouts etc whilst development focuses mainly on the functionality or a particular piece of content.

Enterprise Systems Analysis & Integration careers focus on designing the structural computer network technologies which match business processes. Strong Analytical skills and previous experience in large enterprises help individuals excel as they contribute to the success of such technologies. Workforce management, distribution management or production management are some of the most common business areas such an individual would focus on.

Education & Research IT specialisation provide educational and research tools for possibly the widest range of applications. Learning applications can be considered in almost any environment that can benefit from some form of digital knowledge transfer and can range from simple learning interfaces to massive information repositories which include complex trouble-shooting guides.

Fulltime IT professionals generally work in one of two areas: they either work for an IT services company or within an IT department in a company. That is not to say that IT skills are limited to these two areas. Many so-called ‘non-techies’ are now called on to demonstrate IT competencies within their different departments such as sales, human resources, manufacturing, distribution or finance. In order to provide yourself with the broadest range of opportunities you will need to find out which business IT courses you could be taking to fill in gaps in your market or compete for better job prospects.

So whether you are looking for a typing course or a certified network administration course you will need to dig deep to find the IT Course that will specifically be an advantage to you.
